Model Railroading > GP38ACDate: 04/28/17 05:42 GP38AC Author: Brakeman Is there any physical difference between an GP38AC and GP38?
Date: 04/28/17 06:56 Re: GP38AC Author: mcdeo I was curious too, so a quick internet search looks like there are one or two minor differences. I'd think more specific to when the unit was built and for which RR. My guess are just normal production changes in the early '70's before the -2 units came out.

The alternator produces AC power which is rectified to DC, while the generator makes DC.

Date: 05/05/17 19:04 Re: GP38AC Author: IORY_fan The honest answer to this question is that the external difference from a GP38 to GP38AC is the blower housing(bulge behind the conductors side of the cab) is ribbed on the GP38AC and smooth on the GP38.....
