NS Triple Crown Away From Home Rails

Here's a video of one of the trains from our recent theme day of Trains Foreign to California.  This NS train is on SP rails rolling by an industrial park in the South Bay Area (southeast of San Francisco).  This train has no work enroute.  It proceeded from Oakland to Truckee, with a crew change at Roseville.

This area is about five feet above the floor, by the time this train reaches the snow sheds of our version of Donner Pass the train will be twelve feet above the floor.

The first photo shows the train passing the Pleasanton industrial area.  If you look carefully, you'll see that our Southern Pacific track in this area has granite ballast.  The tracks in the foreground has a red rock ballast.  Those tracks belong to the Western Pacific.  Between Oakland and Elvas Tower (Sacramento), the two railroads cross each other at grade at three different locations, Magnolia Tower, Niles Jct, and Radum Jct.

The second photo shows two of the four snow sheds on the 'Hill'.

I like the crossing track into the industrial siding. Don't see that on very many layouts but so prototypical.
