Scale Trains Burlington Northern SD40-2 another look...
Author: wheel_slip

When I ordered this model I fully intended to turn it into a HLCX rent-a-wreck... It would fit in better with my fleet if it were updated and patched, but I can't do it. I've always kinda liked the Burlington Northern, that's probably why I got this thing in the first place. So, why not go ahead with the original plan? ScaleTrains did too good of a job on the beacon and class lights to chop them off and cover them up! BN 7048 will get to stay a Burlington Northern locomotive and become my only BN power in my collection.
Here's BN 7048.

A classic workhorse...nice job! I probably would have made the same decision.

Excellent weathering job! I like how you worked the grime into the creases and crevices of the body plus the overall effect of the underframe. Very nice indeed---you've created a typical BN locomotive!

Love the stain below the fuel filler...awesome job. Now you need 3 more, and a bunch of 4750 cu ft covered hoppers for a big Montana-style grain train!

Wise decision! Always had a soft spot for BN's SD40-2 as well! Nice job on the subtle weathering.
So is it safe to say Scale Trains has the same handrail problems as Athearn?

I looked at my first Scale trains this week. The regular SD40-2s had the front handrails bent like this BN unit.
The rivet counter version was not bent funny.
And those class lights are out of this world.

Handrails are OK... The only exception is that the forming of the front set could have been done better. I have a couple without the anti-climber and they are fine as well. That said, they aren't bad enough that I would complain.

Speaking about complaining about straight handrails. Often I look down the long hood of a locomotive and see just how wavy these are in real life. So much so that if the real locomotive were a model, I'd probably complain. I keep meaning to take a picture of a typical set, but I never have got around to it. ;)

Very nice looking engine and weathering. So, get a second one, and beat it up as your leaser.

Oh, and I like the Pacer too.

Re: Scale Trains couplers

Now I have my Southern SD40-2s in hand I can say the factory couplers are not dummys as some have reported. They have a spring operated knuckle to allow coupling to occur by moving two couplers together the same way KD couplers do. They do not have the wire air brake hose to allow magnetic uncoupling. It looks like these are compatible with KD #5 and #158 couplers.

I never was one for bubble gum machines but I have to admit all the lighting on that engine is just flat good.

Is it me, or is the bubble gum machine a big "large"?

Rob;

Scale Trains, used two different designs of beacons. The BN 7048 & 8-14 both have the Federal Signal 372 models, and BN 7054 & 7068 both have the Prime PM 8911's.

Russ
