ʎɹɹɐl Date: 09/20/17 18:57 Re: Athearn SP Halloween F7s Author: FiveChime Unique paint scheme also applied to T&NO Fs 630, 631, and SP 6342, and 6364.

They look worse in real life than they did in the announcement brochure. I would have modeled another railroad if SP had chose this scheme. The ALCo PAs they did in this scheme were hideous. The B units lost out in this scheme and the S/G as they became one solid color with no trim. SP did two f units in this black and orange, but used the masking of the scarlet/grey scheme with the wings. and they were hideous as well. Fortunately they redeemed themselves with the Black Widow look. That said, Athearn nailed the scheme with the model shown, so kudos to them for that.. Date: 09/20/17 20:40 Re: Athearn SP Halloween F7s Author: MojaveBill Ugly.

Thanks Athearn for doing something so unique. sphauler Date: 09/21/17 03:33 Re: Athearn SP Halloween F7s Author: rschonfelder What time period were these units in that scheme?
Rick Date: 09/21/17 07:29 Re: Athearn SP Halloween F7s Author: SPDRGWfan It's not my favorite version but interesting to mix in if I were modeling that period. Unfortunately I don't have enough funds to go that far out of my modeling focus.
I recall one of our former forumite who has passed on painted one like that and showed us photo's back in 2014. Cheers, Jim Fitch Date: 09/21/17 07:31 Re: Athearn SP Halloween F7s Author: SPDRGWfan rschonfelder Wrote:

I have a hunch that the scarlet/gray scheme came about because those two colors are a close match to U.S.Navy "Deck Gray" and "Insignia Red", and as the SP served the Navy Supply Depot in Oakland, they could get a LOT of War Surplus paint for little or no cast. Just hunch..... Date: 09/21/17 11:32 Re: Athearn SP Halloween F7s Author: SantaFeRuss MojaveBill Wrote:

I believe some units lasted til 1970's Date: 09/21/17 18:12 Re: Athearn SP Halloween F7s Author: Chad I have to agree this is an interesting paint scheme but I did not order one, I ordered the AB Black Widow set and picked them up today. Very nice set and the Tsunami2 like in the low nose GP9 is wonderful.
