I file a taper on both sides of the flat foot of the rail, and put a shallow bevel on the very base. This gives me a tool that I can chuck into a pin vice or in a small file holder to "loosen up" the joiner. Once you get it started on the rail, it's fine. Some commercial track can have little burrs on the rail end that needs to be cleaned up with a file.
