An accomplished passenger car modeler I am acquainted with uses stranded household eletrical wire. He picks apart and bends the strands to form the lamps, and then paints them.

I have used the smallest brass plated twist nails found in hardware stores. The heads are rounded at the top giving the effect of a lamp shade and being brass plated they stand out on a table. The smallest ones are about 6 inches in diameter in HO scale which is rather large in actual size but they seem to fit fine on a HO scale table. Also, I have used # 18 x 3/4" brass plated escutcheon pins, which were easier to cut, by Everbilt. Next time you're at the hardware store take a look.
