Thanks for sharing. No T-motors for decades, now too many to choose from.

Time for the T-motor flood/glut...  Those look very nice, but only as-delivered and 1980s styles announced for the first run (I hope modernized versions with ditch lights follow because late 1990s is when the DRGW ones were more often seen east of the Mississippi).  I hope the later runs of them (and other SD40-2s) will also address the one remaining minor issue I see with ST locos - the bowed plastic handrails.

Yikes - both my wallet and my brain are in trouble now after watching the ScaleTrains video and looking at their website. The details for the specific unit numbers are spectacular.  The descriptions along with the history of the model are elaborate. Here is a quick summary:
Cost (Rivet Counter): Retail/Selling Price
a. ESU Sound units $324/$259
b. DC only $209/$169

SP#s
a. 8307, 8320,8369 - Snoot 123" nose, Locotrol (Master, Remote) and "L" window details
b. 8546, 8533, 8558 - 88" nose

DRGW
a. 5356, 5369, 5372 -  81" nose
b. 5387, 5390, 5394 - 88" nose

I've already got 4 of the Athearn DRGW T-2s, but these are spectacular.  How many more do I need to haul coal up Tennessee Pass?  I am even tempted to get an SP "Snoot".

Joe in Castle Rock, CO and how I miss seeing the DRGW on the Joint Line

ADDITIONAL NOTE:
On the ST Tunnel Motor video,  did I hear Shane say that ST will install (and program) an ESU "motor control only" decoder in the DC versions to make all the light packages operate correctly?  The ST website does not mention this. I assume this would be an extra charge on top of the "selling price" of $169? Can someone correct me if I a wrong?

This is a surprising, but welcome release.

Very glad I did not order some of the new Athearns now.  Would much rather these.  Much better looking!

Intermountain may as well abandon their project.   2? years behind and no photos, not to mention their track record with engines is not the greatest.

Wow, very nice. Price is not outrageous either. Certainly puts some pressure on Athearn.

Based on Paul’s comments regarding SP models I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Dash 9 and AC4400 one day as definitive models!

I had a feeling ScaleTrains would do one. Now they need to do SD40T-2s for 1990s to present day versons. They need to do more 1990s-present day SD40-2s too. Glad ScaleTrains decided to do one

I'm sure they or Athearn Genesis will do one eventually. There's a high demand for a detailed Dash 9/AC4400CW model

So these are the bulk of the 8300 series for SP's radio controlled locomotives of the day. In contrast with the upcoming Athearn run of the first few in the 8300 series which had a slightly longer nose.

Any ideas whether Scale Trains will be going into the SP iconic SD45T-2's or the the SD40T-2 versions?

If you read carefully, several of the models are detailed as mid-80's timeframe. Only about half are detailed "as delievered". I'm more interested in the later versions that fit my timeframe.

I was at the NMRA show in KC today and the Scale Trains SD40T-2 needs to be seen to be believed. It is ABSOLUTLEY AWESOME. The competitors' looks like a Tyco unit compared to this model. If it runs half as well as it looks, it'll be a grand slam home run.

It looks great. They were able to completely hide the rear driveshaft and gear tower in the frame so you can’t see it at all when you look through the radiator.

I saw this in the MR newsletter today, boy oh boy are these tempting.  I may wait as I model the mid-90's, but I could always "back date" just a bit to run the trains I remember seeing as a kid.  Time for a chat with the CFO.

Competition is good. Hope they get it right. Now let's see a good SP SD9 in 60s and 70s era before all who saw them meet their maker.

I have been contemplating upgrading my Athrean units with leds, Tsunami2's,and motors.

Not much point now. They might just become mid consist dummy units if this new drive pulls like the regular SD40-2s do.

I think that if you purchase the decoder from they it will be perogrammed to the lighting on the 21 pin motor control ones.

Glad to see the SD40T-2 but I agree a well detailed SP SD9 would be a huge hit. Imagine the variations that could be done.
