Brush Applied Paint in RR Colors?
Author: BNSF3888

Since Scalecoat has moved into the setting sun on the horizon does anyone manufactur brush applied paint. I am looking to paint very small detail parts (DW ditch light castings, 5th wheel castings for TOFC, snowplows, couplers, etc).

Look forward to your replies.

Thanks

William

For small part brush painting/touch up I've used Modelflex Paint. These are water based acrylics and go on well with a brush, and dry fairly quickly and don't seem to drastically change shade when dry. I've used these paints to mix up small batches of multiple colors to match a given pre-painted model, using a small Post-It notepad to mix paint drops then letting a smear dry to see the how well the match comes out.

best regards,
Mark G.

You could also use TruColor paints, http://trucolorpaint.com/products/ , as well. Their TCP-800 series is designed as brushable paints. In addition to railroad colors, they also have automotive, naval, military armor and aircraft colors. You could also look at Testors, Rapido, Citadel, MiG and Vallejo for brushable paint options. Testors does have a limited selection of basic railroad colors that harken back to Floquil / Polly Scale days.

There's much more to the topic than be covered in a single posting.  To look at the current range of acrylic colors, and for some nice tips get Joe Fugate's book on Acrylic Paints in a post-Floquil world;  https://store.mrhmag.com/store/p130/mrh-acrylic-paint-guide.html  Joe reviewed several of the lines of acrylic paints in regard to model railroad colors.  It's certainly not perfect but it's a lot of good info for the money.

For health reasons I pretty much went to acrylics a number of years ago with no regrets.  I do all kinds of detail parts replacements or additions and I use my brush painted acrylics for touch up, shading, weathering, etc.  With practice it's possible to match many models' paint schemes.

I use both Modelflex and Valejo for brush painting. Both seem to work pretty well and level out nicely.
