Model Railroading > Building the Shasta DivisionDate: 10/15/18 21:56 Building the Shasta Division Author: dmaffei Work continues on the Dunsmuir layout in Redding CA. Much progress has been made, and almost completed with the most complex bench work on the layout.
Photo ONE is a look at the layout starting to wrap around the north wall of the building. To the left is Black Butte at top level and Cascade staging below. At center on top level is the trackage between Black Butte and Mt. Shasta. The center top area will have the rock quarry industry located north of the city of Mt Shasta. The bottom level at center is Siskiyou staging and McCloud staging. To the right is the newest bench work, the corner section is location of McCloud staging trackage coming up to the top level at Mt. Shasta. To the far right, Top level will be Mt. Shasta and lower level will be a full size Lake head bridge at MP 288 (Tunnel 11) seen in this Photobob post: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,1945545,1945545#1945545 Photo TWO is a close up look at the corner bench work with McCloud staging trackage coming up to Mt. Shasta Photo THREE is the latest bench work and also an addition we made to the original plan. The Lake head bridge at MP288. (Tunnel 11 will be on the right side) Rick Had all the MASTER RAIL MODELS (now out of business) 90 foot deck girder bridge sections to do the bridge. He also had a special extruded aluminum section made by a machine shop for the deck girders. He will need to scratch build the center truss section. The layout designer Byron had left this bridge off the original plan. We decided to put in on the lower level below Mt Shasta and make this spectacular bridge the start of his railroad instead of the bridge at Sims. The scene will be 9.5 feet long to fit the 8 foot 4 inch bridge. The actual prototype bridge is 750 feet long. The top level bench work will be supported by on 2X2 3/16 steel angle iron seen in the photo. The distance from the rail-head on bridge to the bottom of the lowest pier is 109 feet on the prototype bridge. The Shasta Division Archives had the plan for this bridge which helped immensely with these dimensions Past posts here on TO: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,4464608,4464608#4464608 https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,3755178,3755178#3755178 https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,3291599,3291599#msg-3291599 Edited 2 time(s). http://mrr.trains.com/-/media/Files/PDF/trackplans/2018/Model%20Railroad%20Planning%202018/HOscaleSouthernPacificShastaDivision.pdf I see what you're saying, the new bridge is on the lower deck below Mt Shasta city, showing the bridge north of Lakehead making use of the long wall. Lots of work, thanks for posting the photos. Cool photos of the actual location as well, lots to see. + Let me re-phrase that.... Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 10/15/18 22:46 by TCnR. Javier Cervantes Castle Rock , CO Date: 10/15/18 22:34 Re: Building the Shasta Division Author: dmaffei Thanks for the great link neighbor. Yes the Lake head bridge will be directly below the Mt. Shasta yard. The lower level then leads to the Sims bridge scene which was the old "Starting Point" of the railroad. We decided to use the lower bench work below Mt. Shasta yard as a picture window scene for the Lake head bridge eliminated by rope lighting.

Date: 10/17/18 08:13 Re: Building the Shasta Division Author: bluesboyst Hi... In pic1 you have a grade going from the middle of the pic to the right. What is that grade elevation? is that 2%?
Date: 10/17/18 08:58 Re: Building the Shasta Division Author: jkchubbes That lakehead bridge is a great use of what otherwise would be a fairly blank spot according to the track plan.
Date: 10/17/18 09:06 Re: Building the Shasta Division Author: dmaffei Tom,
TCnR provided a link for the track plan from Model Railroad Planning: http://mrr.trains.com/-/media/Files/PDF/trackplans/2018/Model%20Railroad%20Planning%202018/HOscaleSouthernPacificShastaDivision.pdf Stephen Good eye on that grade, that's the McCloud interchange trackage leading to Mt. Shasta. The grade starts at 2% then gets to 3% before leveling off. You can see the top of that grade in photo 2 on the right. Short line railroading at its best. That is the steepest grade on the layout. All other main line grades will be will be no more than 2.0 - 2.5% Date: 10/17/18 09:08 Re: Building the Shasta Division Author: dmaffei Yes sir,
Our thoughts exactly, I hope track plan designer Byron doesn't mind... :-) jkchubbes Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > That lakehead bridge is a great use of what > otherwise would be a fairly blank spot according > to the track plan. I am in the planning stages and have a 7 X 35 foot space to do build in. I was planning on having a 2% grade..... What is the material you are using on the grade for the track in pic2?
