Anyone added diaphrams to old rivarossi coaches?
Author: steam290

I have 3 old Rivarossi coaches with rubber diaphrams added to the ends for realism. The diaphrams were added sometimes before I bought the cars so I am not sure where the person aquired them.  Has anyone on here done this upgrade, and what do you suggest using?

I am an N-scale passenger guy but long ago I gave up on diaphragms, other than non-touching ones for appearance.
It's just a royal pain in the nether regions...The beauty of this hobby is that we can look at our trains and "see" whatever
we want to see of our creations...
Good luck in your search!

I have seen Black construction paper folded back and forth like a tiny oblong accordion used between passenger cars, rounded slightly on top of course, and they were super cheap, super flexible, and actually looked quite nice! === === = === JLH

Yeah, I’m not above going in this direction. I don’t need interlocking diaphragms, but just something to make the ends of the coaches look a little more realistic. I’m running all Rivarossi heavyweights at this point, (mostly older).
I’d post a picture but I can’t figure out how to do it from my phone.

If they have an aluminum striker plate they are likely MHP, but not manufactured for decades.

Try eBay.  They were a popular item for AHM/IHC, Athearn, MDC, and Rivorossi cars back in the day.

Thee cars I have either have plastic or rubber ones... one is literally just rubber.  That's the one I'd like more of, but I can't find any.

All the passenger cars (mostly brass) on my HO scale layout have diaphragms, made by using Walthers folded bellows glued to modified Rivarossi striker plates that have the side nubs trimmed off, barely touching each other. Works very well but uncoupling them can get tricky.

If need be a small rectangle of black foam such as that in the old blue-box athearn kits can be used as a very flexible view-block to represent full diaphragms.
