Model Railroading > PSMRE Semaphores

This is the Puget Sound Model Railroad Engineers layout in the Washington State History Museum. It represents the Tacoma area in the 1950's, including a portion of the Stampede Sub.I recently finished installing the first phase of our signalling system, semaphores, on the Stampede Sub, using Tomar Semaphores and 3D printed hangers I designed, that fit through a 7/8" hole. Control electronics are Tam Valley Depot Dual 3way servo controller. Logic is programmed in to Railroad and Co's, Train Controller Gold.This coming Saturday (12/01/18) is our last Ops session of the year and we'll get a chance to see how many "bugs" I have to chase down.

Great stuff!   Love the realistic little 'bounce' once the signal drops...  beautiful layout!

Nice design and 3D print. I've only had my Prusa MK3 for about 3 months now, but it looks like you might have printed it with something a little bit more expensive than mine? The quality/resolusion looks great for a 3D print.

Steve, your work is an inspiration! While 3-D printing is a bit beyond me, your basic design is straightforward-enough to replicate for my own needs using other methods. This must have been a fun project.

I use Shapeways.  They do some finishing work after the print (which I believe is a powdered nylon).  So it does come out much better than a 3D printer like the Prusa.

That is really neat, great job.

Thanks for posting this. More, please ? Your semaphores look and function realistically.

Very nice, although in some cases the "bounce" was a bit too exaggerated.

It's a little tricky to get that just right.  How well it works depends a lot on how easily the blade moves.   The more easily the blade moves, the more LED white light seeps out.   Then there's a little itty bitty potentiometer on the control board to adjust the amount of bounce, and those don't seem to be very consistent.  In fact, I just skipped the feature on the last 3 signals.

When I get a little further along. The layout is not very presentable at this stage.

They already work better than CN signals. You don't need to drag around six extra baggage cars so the system can see the train!
