New covered hopper from Atlas!
Author: ghemr

I just received an email from Atlas announcing a new freight car. This will be a Trinity 3230 PD covered hopper with six different leasing company reporting marks. I'm guessing it will incorporate the same quality as their 5660 hoppers.  I look forward to such modern products!!

I think we officially have the newest, highest priced non brass HO freight car...

It's about time. I've studied those hoppers up close since they were new. Sadly, I don't see an CBFX yet.

Not quite.  The HO scale bilevel auto racks from Intermountain Railway Co. are priced a fair bit higher - around $89 MSRP last I checked. Not a lick of brass in that car either.

Should also offer some cars with the name and number up high on the cars like some recent other covered hoppers.

The price gives me second thoughts to but it is neat to see a unique car that I recognize. A decade ago I used to see the Roanoke Cement cars on a Richmond, VA local that served a cement plant on the south side of the city.

Based on the similarities to the larger cf BLMA tooled model, think it’s a safe bet this is also legacy BLMA tooling? Just take the 5bay hopper a cut out two of the middle troughs... Not that I’m complaining. Would be nice if credit was given even though the manuf. is now gone.

Too new for my mid-to-late 70s timeframe but these are a welcome addition for modern modelers. I’m sure Tangent, Moloco, Rapido et al will find ways to spend my money!
I’ll see if I have photos of these to share. I don’t model modern but I do enjoy taking photos of it.

Well, I agree, the price of plastic anymore is crazy, but not as crazy as the George H.W. Bush locos for sale on Ebay at this time.  Would be nice to have, but my billfold is way empty to these bidders!

I went for 2 of the Intermountain Autoracks only b/c they had the Providence and Worcester RR in 3 numbers IIRC, something I haven't seen since.

This is a great offering, if too new for me.  I'm waiting for the PD3500 from Rapido, which will likely cost about the same or more.

Kind of apples to apples for production purposes, from 2-3 years ago:
http://www.springmillsdepot.com/pd3000main.htm

$54.95
Many of them have sold, a few are left in less popular roads.

What are all the reporting marks used on the 3230 covered hopper?
