Walthers GP9 Ph II undecorated
Author: fbe

I got a couple pairs of these today. Part #910-10400 a number to warm the heart of any MILW electric fan.

The undecorated model comes unpainted mostly as a kit though the chassis is fully assembled. There is a bag of detail parts and the model comes with 2 long hood castings one with dynamic brakes and the other without. It is a chop nose version with a flat hood. It has straight top cab windows slightly higher than the front door window. It will not match every railroad's homebuilt railroad but it is very close to most. It is also available as a high short hood model though I do not have a model number.

The locomotive just crawls on DC power and might creep all day on DCC with 128 step speed control. The motherboard takes 21 pin decoders and 9 pin decoders with a 9 pin to 21 pin harness. A 28mm or 1" round speaker will fill a vertical metal mount.

The trucks don't rotate as much as common GP models do so 18" radius may be it's operating limit.

This looks like Walthers has another winner in their Mainline line. They come available in a number of railroad lettering.

A couple Undecs surfaced here yesterday as well. I didn't realize that it was going to come with 2 hoods: 1 DB equipped and 1 non-DB. A very respectable model and it ran quite well (DC).

The drive under these is a stock, off the shelf Proto GP drive, which is quite nice.

The handrails are the finest castings I have seen in an HO model.

So they don't have the 14 to 1 gearing?

The standard Proto drive is 14:1 gear box with helical gears.  It is the same drive that as used under the last WalthersProto GP20 run and the latest WalthersProto GP7 production run.

I guess my question is, does it have the same gear ratio as an Athearn?
