Appearently....as the story goes....some shop worker took a look at the first loco when it arrived and wrote in chalk on the smokebox front "big boy". The name stuck.

4026? Interesting, a fantasy scheme perhaps of additional Big Boys beyond the 1st 25?

It's not a "perfect" model, nothing ever is, but the number keeps the rivet counters at bay.

I seem to remember from a  picture in TRAINS magazine that the term Big Boy was scribbled on the smoke box
of the first or an early unit while under constuction at Alco.

The 4-8-8-4 locomotives were originally to be called the Wahsatch class. However at the American Locomotive Company's Schnectady works one of their employees chalked "Big Boy" on the smokebox door and that moniker stuck to this class of locomotive ever since.

Hi Dave,
I don't know however our Club Northern weighs in at just under 1,600 lbs I'm told.
So I could easily see the overall weight of the engine knocking on the door of 1,800 lbs.
