Model Railroading > Treating for termites - affects on layouts

I just discovered that I have several investations of drywood termites around my home. I am trying to decide between Orange Oil treatments or whole house fumigation. I would appreciate any comments on your expereinces if you recently had your layout - and layout room -  treated with either method. Were there any protections you needed to take for your layout, rolling stock, scenery and structures? Were there any adverse results to the layout after the treatment?

Drape the layout  and rolling stock with lightweight plastic painters tarps and you should be fine. 

Talk to your exterminator, some fumagants are deadly to electronics.  I can't recall the brand name, tho.

Might want to have the exterminator check your layout framing too.
The little suckers might be munching on that too!

The gas they use won't harm electronics. If they did, your TV, computer, etc would be toast.
If you use gas, don't cover your layout. When they ventilate your home after gassing it, they remove your covers. Anything that may trap the gas has to be exposed. Also, some outfits bring in large fans to ventilate. Think hurricane on your layout.
You won't be allowed into your home until they clear the gas, so don't think you can go back in to see if they are careful around your layout.
Also, remove all food stuffs, pet food, etc from the home. Bottled water too.
The gas is non resediual, so your layout wil be fine.

Indeed, the gas is DEADLY.  There have been instances in my state when criminals went into tented homes with intent to steal much of the stuff inside.   

They checked in, but never checked out.

And while running your trains and you hear what sounds to be a flat wheel, it might be a termite that got "sandwiched"!  Hopefully NOT!!

Didn't have an issue with a covered layout. A couple of guys went in with breathing apparatus and carefully removed and disposed of the plastic. Your mileage may vary.

How extensive is your infestation?
I recently learned that WD-40 works
wonders on killing termites!

If you can see and access where they enter
you can spray the WD-40 directly into the
passageways using the thin nozzle tube that
comes with the WD-40!

If they are in the framing inbetween the walls, not very effective. Also, you will have to deal with the smell of WD-40.
Better just gas the little suckers. You also get the benefit of killing all the other insects in your home.
