You can find a prototype stuffed and mounted on the west side of the Havre, MT depot. Both the 1:1 and 1:87 are impressive.

Looks like brass...

I believe this is the Broadway Limited Brass Hybrid series of locomotives.

Nicy nice!

BLI's hybrid  engines are really good.  Run extremely well.

The model is indeed an HO scale Broadway Limited Imports “Brass Hybrid” S-2 4-8-4. I purposely picked the #2584 as that is the number of the 1:1 prototype on display at Havre, MT to this day. In my quasi-plausible modeling world, the Great Northern Railway Historical Society, BNSF Railway, and an anonymous wealthy donor or two have teamed together to bring the old steamer back to life to use for excursions and public education and awareness.

It will look great with 10-12 heavyweight dark green painted passenger cars trailing on the layout. I believe all the passenger steam was gone by the time streamlined green and orange Empire Builder passenger cars came along. Of course a move like that with EB cars might be called a farewell tour before the locomotive was retired and moved to display at the depot.

It boils down to what you have available or want to buy. Running the S2 on a layout populated with a passel of T4 diesels just pegs it as an excursion special. If the club does a 1930s era steam set up then the all green train is a premier train.

I was considering such a train with, as you said, 10-12 heavyweights. I can’t find much info (or I guess don’t know where to look) on the consists of the 1930s & 1940s. Then I’d have to try and locate all the correct cars in model form. Walthers?  Branchline?

Is there one at Whitefish?

Some cars can come from Walthers and Branchline (Atlas) others will need to be brass, mainly the rebuilt coaches and some headend equipment. Personally I'd rather see SP&S 700.

If you're running it as a modern day "restored" steam locomotive the passenger cars really don't have to match.

Whitefish has an NW 3 diesel and a bruck.

Western passenger trains on GN, NP and MILW seemed to run 12-15 cars, a little shorter in the winter and longer in the summer until they added more sections for the summer. One or two baggage cars, one RPO. There were 3-4 coaches and a couple of Pullman cars. Add to that a diner and observation to fill the train. Add more coaches and sleepers as needed to fill.

Branchline would be my choice but Walthers might be easier to find. Seats and passengers are an expersive option.

I sometimes run a MILW ski train with a Westinghouse EP-3 boxcab electric with a baggage car for skiis and equipment, 6-8 coaches for riders and an observation car for bar services.
Add a diner amongst the coaches. This would run from Seattle or Tacoma to Snoqualmie pass. GN might have done the same from Seattle to Stevens Pass.
