Model Railroading > New power on the Stack TrainDate: 06/14/19 03:55 New power on the Stack Train Author: funnelfan My Atlas GP40M had been occupying space on my workbench far too long. I had been in a quandary for some time. A couple years ago I bought a un-numbered version with the pinstripe thinking I would find some number Atlas didn't do and model it to that unit. Turns out Atlas made the only two BN GP40M's with the pin stripe (3513, 3517). Then I thought that I might try to remove the pinstripe, but it was too hard to remove. After considering a full-on repaint, I ultimately just opted to model the 3513. I finished the model over this past week and got to run it on the point of my Evergreen Stack Train on the River City Modelers layout in Spokane last night. The GP40M's were ex CB&Q GP40's that BN rebuilt in the late 80's in the Whitefaced scheme. But the pinstripe wasn't added until 1993.

That locomotive always draws a lot of attention. The other two units were the BN GP39-2 #2705 and LMX B39-8 #8577.

Date: 06/23/19 17:00 Re: New power on the Stack Train Author: fbe The operating crews request you keep these on intermodal trains at least 2.0 to 2.5 hp/ton. BN would send them over to the MRL at 0.8hp/t. Theoretically they had enough hp to make the grade but they could not maintain 25 mph. When they dropped below that they got into their short time ratings which caused units like the LMX to reduce horsepower output to prevent traction motor burnup. So 3800 hp became 3500 hp then 3200 hp then 3000 hp or less. Next thing you know the train is stalled out and the crew is doubling the hill perhaps in the winter in the deep snow.
