MR Canandaigua Southern cover photo help

Hey Gang,

I am looking for the MR issue from probably the early '70's that showed one of John Armstrong's steamers running along a river bank with a rock cliff face in the background. It's a very well done scene.

I've done the usual searches. If you can help me identify the issue, I can go from there.

That scene sounds like his design element, a "cosmetic curve".

I recall the photo but can't help. I got rid of all my MR mags for health reasons (allergies and asthma). It would seem that someone with a MR index can help you. Likely, some aspect of his layout was covered in that issue.

I think the issue you are looking for is January  and March 1971.
There are 11 references to the CS in the MR index on Train.com but those are the two oldest.

Jan. 71 issue has a cover shot of a caboose and small depot on the CS, but it's more of a close-up.
Page 47 has a longer shot of the curve with a prominent steam engine.
IIRC somewhere there's a longer shot showing a whole train in the curve.
It could have illustrated an article, or been in a Kalmbach book, but I don't remember.

Bill, I think the photo you're referring to is in the older edition  ('60's-'70's) of Armstrong's Track Planning for Realistic Operation.
