Another 3-way turnout

At the Indiana Live Steamers, we also have two three way turnouts.  This design is a little more compact.  These are in the yard.

This shows the mecanical part of the turnout.  The gentleman who designed them has passed away.  He did a lot of engineering work at the ILS.

That could also be called a LAP Switch.

I remember using that switch.  The operating mechanism is pure genius.

That design requires absolute deminsions to prevent derailments.  And, wheels being in gauge too.

Erv, our grounds director, works hard for that look.  He and another member spend a lot of time working on the grounds.
Thanks for noticing, Boyd.  I will let him know.

Lap switches are used where there is a constraint that two separate sets of points wouldn't work.
Operative word:  Overlap
