Rapido Trains next 3D Scan
Author: 4489

I understand that Rapido is doing a 3D scan for their next project in Portland at the Rail Heritage centre.

My thoughts are that it will not be a Steam locomotive.

A PA anyone?

Just my thoughts and I am not associated with Rapido in any way!!

You beat me to posting about this. I was thinking of the Nickle Plate PA was a likely target.

Are there any MLW RS-10's out there? :)

Since they are already doing SW1200s my bet is they are scanning SW10 UP #96.
I hope they don't forget to send the paint chip to the factory... or else we may get lemon yellow SW10s.

PS.   If the photos I've seen of the ex-BCOL M420 (or what was left of it) at Portland reflect its current condition, I think scanning it would come up with an incomplete scan...

My thought from the silouhette teaser in the Email it that it's the Nickel Plate RSD-5.

If all the equipment to scan is already there why stop scanning after just one locomotive?

Probably didn't bring enough thumb drives with them.

An SW10 would be nice. I'd have to think maybe an Alco, which seems to be the gaps they are filling in with on models. But yes, since they are their, maybe get several scans for future projects.

What Canadian railroads had RSD-5 or PA locomotives?   Did US owners have any that regularly operated into Canada?  Is there another locomotive type sharing the same chassis that was very common in Canada?
(As far as I know I think the answers to all of those are "None" and "No")

I doubt if Rapido is doing either a PA or a RSD-5 if there is not some link to operations in Canada...   On the PA, why would Rapido do one right after Walthers released PAs?   On the RSD-5 why would Rapido compete with Atlas?

Rapido is already doing the SW1200RS - a Canadian iconic locomotive - and it happens to share the same chassis with many other SWs incuding the rebuild UP SW10s (that have only ever been offered in HO in brass)...   Since the SW10s were home modified on the UP there has been some debate on the contours of the rebuilt section of the units, and what better way to make an accurate model than go out and do a 3D scan of one...

Sorry but YES PA's were regulars into Montreal, Canada on the D&H.

Before AMTRAK and after.

There were CN demo PA-1 units.

Sorry, I was previously unaware of those PA-1 units in CN demo...  Likely because they only tested for a few months on CN before going to MKT (and more than a decade before I was born)... and CN apparently liked them so much that they didn't order any.

PS.  That photo on the turntable is a classic...  All it needs is the road foreman standing at the side and scratching his head, with caption saying "Alco said they would fit".

Wow!  Had no idea about those!  Any idea what happened to them?

I'll clarify... They were demonstrator scheme and numbered units that tested on CN.  After only a couple of months on CN in early 1950 they were sold June 1950 to MKT (became MKT 153A and 153C).

Just because Rapido happens to be a Canadian company does not mean they only produce models of prototypes that saw service on Canadian Railroads (look at all the New Haven stuff they have released). I'd saw the SW-10 is a good guess, since they have already announced a run of US style SW1200's

Atlas RSD5 are the wrong length, a foobie. So a real RSD would be nice.

To clarify: the 2 PA’s that demonstrated on the CNR were painted in CN colors (Gold & Green). if I recall, the builder’s name (MLW, although actually built by ALCo) replaced the CN’s logo on the nose door.
I modeled them years ago. The shells are probably still kicking around in my garage somewhere.

They’re welcome to scan my CN Hawker Siddley caboose any time, just sayin’.
