Ho scale With and without sound They look pretty nice. They also said that the santa fe caboose is still coming and will be announced later. http://athearn.com/Search/Default.aspx?SearchTerm=Caboose Date: 11/04/19 13:48 Re: New Athearn Genesis cabooses announced Author: GRNDMND The UP CA-8's look really nice. $110.00 retail for a caboose with lights is getting up there...

Relative to the Genesis Bay Windows that were first announce in 2012, which were MSRP $99.98 for the lighted versions. So in 7 years, the price has only gone up ten dollars for the lighted version of a Genesis caboose. That's not too bad. BTW, the street price of the sound bay window was around $6x something. So if these new ICC cabooses are under $80 with lights, then in 2020, that won't be too bad all things considered. I would be interested in the UP caboose which is hopefully matches those used in the Kaiser joint UP/D&RGW service. I already had a Centralia as a stand-in if need be. Cheers, Jim Edited 4 time(s). Athearn should fix that before production;

I like having one sound car in a train, and one in the caboose would be nice too. D&RGW 01400 series cabooses seem to command fairly high price for ones with good paint jobs, in the $250 to $350 range I have observed. OTOH, decorated UP cabooses seem to be considerably less. Knowing a few retired Conductors and Brakeman I'd imagine something like the sound of sawing logs, with a dull saw missing a few teeth. Most SBD ones I remember seeing where in Family Lines paint with SBD reporting Mark's replacing the SCL reporting Mark's Michael t Kerner Collinsville, IL Date: 11/05/19 04:14 Re: New Athearn Genesis cabooses announced Author: calsubd when they say lighing do they mean interior lighing or marker lights ?

When I get a project almost done and am starting to feel good about it, a manufacturer comes along and does it better.
Personally I am VERY happy with the UP cars! I love UP cabooses and have bought multiples of the Intermountain and Trix rivetted side CA3/4 types. The CA8 (and the functionally identical CA9s) were welded side cars from the mid 1960s so they represent something different from anything available in plastic before. There are several lettering variations appropriate for these cars over the years. Even though they won't be here until the summer of 2020 I am already drooling (or foaming) with anticipation. A big THANK YOU to Athearn for the UP and CB&Q cars! Gary B. Waverly, NE Date: 11/05/19 07:52 Re: New Athearn Genesis cabooses announced Author: alcoc636 Snoring?

Date: 11/05/19 09:00 Re: New Athearn Genesis cabooses announced Author: binder001 UP never had extended vision cabooses, but their standard caboose design from 1942 onwards had a full width cupola, the full width of the body. UP bypassed the extended vision caboose and went to bay window cars. The few extended vision cabooses on the UP were ex-MoPac via the merger.

Date: 11/05/19 21:13 Re: New Athearn Genesis cabooses announced Author: CSX602 If a fully detailed road specific caboose with LED lighting and marker lights had been introduced in 1990 at $55 retail would you have bought it?
(BTW, I think a majority would say "Yes") Factoring in inflation, average income, consumer price index, etc... the $110 in 2020 will be less than what $55 was in 1990... So if somebody would have paid $55 in 1990, they shouldn't have much issue paying $110 in 2020... Of course, if you take a look at what your salary was in 1990 and compare it to today, then that is going to play into how you feel about the $110 price... If you make a lot more now than then and your income has kept up with inflation then you probably see the new cabooses as at least reasonably priced if not a bargain. Edited 3 time(s).
