Model Railroading > Two pics from Saturday op sessionDate: 11/18/19 08:10 Two pics from Saturday op session Author: bobdavis On Saturday, November 16th, a small group of operators from the Salt Lake City area drove up for a session on my PRR Blue Mountain Division HO raiiroad. Several of our local operating crew pitched in to help keep things moving, although the guys from Utah needed very little help once they got familiar with the railroad. I'm attaching two pics from that fun session. The first shot shows a westbound local freight heading up to the summit while an eastbound symbol freight and a w/b ore train make a meet at the bottom of the 1.6% grade. The second shot shows another local freight holding while a second e/b symbol freight passes. Once the e/b is by, the local crew will run around their train and switch the freight warehouse in the picture and a nearby connection to a branch line. The lights on the fascia in the second pic are short circuit detectors, wired in such a way to go out if a short occurs in that power district.
The railroad is set in central Pennsylvania in 1956, and Saturday's session was the 70th since we started running trains in 2008. Bob Date: 11/18/19 08:13 Re: Two pics from Saturday op session Author: King_Coal Photos of your layout are always welcome.

Date: 11/18/19 10:01 Re: Two pics from Saturday op session Author: bobdavis The "iron ore" in photo 1 is actual sifted local rock that really does have the color of ore, and weathers the insides of the cars nicely, too. The 23-car train is a real heavyweight, and definitely needs help on the 1.6%.
Bob Date: 11/18/19 10:46 Re: Two pics from Saturday op session Author: hartrick24 Awesome looking... Does the local make the 1.6% with 10 cars ok?

only one question ..... why wasn’t I invited Date: 11/18/19 15:32 Re: Two pics from Saturday op session Author: bobdavis The two locals that have to deal with the 1.6% grade can make it just fine with 10 cars as long as I assign a road engine such as that GP7 or an H10 2-8-0. I don't have a single diesel switch engine that can handle it, including a heavy Atlas S2. I also have an operating rule that any passenger train of 10 cars or more gets a helper ahead.
