Somewhere near the East Bay on the way to Walnut Creek is Harlin Hay! The date is 1958, but Harlin has already been around for years. Stop in and say hello sometime, old man Ed Harlin would love to sit and chat with you about how great things are. Might even give you a small sample of some of his brothers Edger's homemade moonshine! Usually done around the middle of fall! Of course, feeling warm after a little sip, it is then time to buy a bale or two of hay!

it would be a dream come true to be the kid next door with the bike and have a spur in your neighbors back yard, but oh the hay fever!

The reason this scene looks so good are the details. Here are some I noted:
Hay sign has concrete footings while the sign to the left does not and is different,
Trimmed hedge at house next door.
White center line in street. These may have been yellow elsewhere but not in California in the 1950s.
Inner window raised & partially open (someone inside).
Barn is designed for hay storage, not a milking barn, etc.
All those bays of hay are correctly colored

Your spot on. All of his scenes are like that. Details, beautifully executed.

That's because he modeled the ordinary and not the extraordinary.
