Scaletrain CNW SD40-2 roof?
Author: sp8192

These are Scaletrain HO CNW SD40-2...what is the story behind the white on the top by the rear fans?   These are straight out of the box.  Does anyone know when this was applied and why?   Anyone have any overhead rear pics of them later in life so that weathering can be applied?

Can't add anything to your question, but those are COOL! I have a couple arriving on the porch today in BNSF Patch:)

I just looked at my slide collection and of the CNW SD40-2's I have pics of the roof all are black but the earliest ones are from 1984 so that is 10+ years after delivery so it doesn't answer the question. It could have been delivered that way or it is a mistake I hope someone can answer it for you. I assume they are modeled as delivered.

Could be the answer....but I have never seen that color anti slip paint before.   It is the same in the drawings on the Scaletrains website.   I assume they are correct....just never noticed it before..

T.O. members jumped all over Rapido for the Lehigh Valley red on their RS 11's, the same question about this CNW green ?????
Seems a bit dark to me but great looking units !

I believe those units are repaints done in the early 90's.

Two theories: dust accumulation around the radiators is common, and they are far enough from the exhaust to stay soot free; or, bad pre-paint prep work and most of the paint is faded or chipped away. Both could appear white in the sunlight.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/99142371@N02/9422429093 A 1995 shot by Photographer Newton M. CNW 6859 shows a lighter roof around the radiator fan. There is a noticeable gradient change from green to faded, and visible fading around the flanges of the fan shrouds on both 40s.

Weathering: you could do a green wash--concentrated more in areas--creating a gradient followed by dirt or soot; or paint over it with a gray primer , apply a chipping agent, add your green and chip the paint!

I did a quick search on Railpictures for CNW SD40-2s in the 90s, and there were a couple of photos returned that clearly show that light color on the cover plate on that portion of the hood.  Enough to show that's the way it was painted.  The best vew was a very clean unit on a business car special, so it was likely a fairly new repaint.  The fans on the Scale Trains SD40-2 are cast on a part of the shell, so they had to go through some effort to get that masking.

Betsy is talking about CNW 6867 from 1995. Look at it in 2000. It faired a lot worse that others in its series in the same year.

With the large font numbers on the side of the hoods, those are definitely repaints.

I've never seen this white area before myself, here's a fairly freshly repainted unit leading a train in Iowa, whole roof line looks green to me

But upon further research check out the trailing unit on a train I photographed in Wisconsin, same newer repaint scheme and it does show some white, could it be paint failure?

It could also be a failure of the white letting the older green come through.

It looks to be as dark as the freshly repainted locomotives in the photos linked in other posts on this thread. Aged green locomotives were considerably lighter.

If you look at the second unit in the first photo, taken near Bertram, IA, just east of Cedar Rapids, you'll definetly see white around the radiators.
I have to admit this is the first I've seen/heard of this variation.  And yes, the green does seem a little dark.

And it all coudl be a white for the reduction of heat from the sun.  CORP has some SD-40s (3497-3499) with white cab roofs to help keep the cab cooler in summer.

I believe this is actually an anti-skid paint, which I think was applied to units repainted by Transco Railway Products at the old Oelwein car shop just prior to the UP takeover of the C&NW in the early-mid 1990's.  Prior to this, the C&NW did most of it's repainting in house at the California Ave. coach yard in Chicago.  The following link shows a closeup of this paint on the roof of a repainted ex-RI GP7 at Marshalltown IA in 1995. SD40-2 6867 is the third unit in the same row, and you can also make out the white paint on the radiator hatch on it.

Whoa!

https://www.railpictures.net/photo/57870/

Fallout from a flour mill explosion, or massive dump from a flock of Canadian Geese flying south for the winter? Not sure anyone's gonna model that one like that!
