GS4 paint work done, now to install sound & DCC
Author: SPED

I am getting closer, 4454 is now ready for DCC decoders, glazing, lighting, and final assembly. Using Scalecoat MOW base for the Star Brand paint followed with Testors clearcoat. The decals are Thinfilm #175 Southern Pacific Lettering Gray.

Extensive work was done to the pilot. Beside resoldering a few of the seporated parts, new steps were made and soldered in. New coupler lift bars were also made. New castings for the train air & steam lines were soldered on the engine's pilot and rear of the tender.

Great paint work. Not many folks know that SP lettering is grey, not white, in all eras. I was just working on the SP "drift files" in the Shasta Division archives this past Friday. Every color for everything SP Painted was in there. The Daylight files had every color used from 1937 to 1987 in it.

Please post pictures when assembly is completed

Could it be 12 inches to the foot?

The engine is HO, 1/87 of the real engine. I should have said this because I do allot of "O" scale for a friend.

Nice work!

I have a WSM GS5 factory painted, but they kept the smokebox gloss black instead of painting it graphite, as KTM did with their GS4. So I have masking everything off to paint the smoke.

I'm hoping you'll document the sound and decoder installation. I'm planning on an ESU Loksound 4 with a "sugarcube" in the smokebox, but I'm open to suggestions. Deciding between the Loksound and Tsunami2 was a tough choice, but being able to program the grade crossing function to an A200 ("blat") air horn while keeping the whistle for signalling, rather than switching between primary and alternate horn was what sold me on Loksound at least for this install.

Warmest regards,
