Australian C43/44aci QR National
Author: ajgreen

Hi folks.

In this time of lockdown (for us here in NZ) a recent new aquistion was put into service today. A new Auscision Models C/43/44aci locomotive in QR National colours (#5039) joined it's mate (#6022) for a run around my layout. Yes I know the rolling stock doesn't match, but likewise the cash in the pocket didn't match the price of buying matching hoppers. Always something to save for in the future.

#5039 has a TCS T4X decoder fitted, whilst #6022 has a LOk Pilot decoder.

So here's a couple of grab shots trackside, and a small video clip of the two locomotives working up past the trackside camping spot on my layout.

Enjoy.

Great job on the models and the layout.

In the video were the campers 'Traveling in a Fried out Kombi'?

For the youngsters out there, that refers to the first line of the Men at Work song: "Down Under".

Thanks for sharing Allister. For the the real thing, who makes them and where? What kind of prime mover? Any specs on horsepower, etc., would be interesting too, to compare the locos in the U.S.

Type "C44aci" into your favorite search engine.

Gosh, I just knew someone would say that. I suppose trainorders is no place for discussion.

Trainorders is a great place for discussion.  I just don't understand why some people don't do the most basic of research themselves.

The locomotive was designed by UGL Rail, and built in Australia at the Broadmeadow Workshops (Newcastle, NSW I believe). Prime mover from what I can tell is the GE FDL series (7-FDL-16) with around 4,350 HP. They are 22m in length, and weight (depending on the spec) between 134 - 140 tonnes. They are owned by around eight different operators in and around Australia.

Hope that helps.
