New Rivarossi HO 50' boxcars.
Author: fbe

I don't know how important this is since these cars are already sold out at Walthers and I just got mine today from preorders from months ago.

These are finely detailed 7 panel 9' door cars with modern dreadnaught ends in a 3/4 top rib pattern. All ladders and grabirons are cast on though the thin doors easily slide open.

Paint is smoothly applied and lettering is crisp and opaque.

The trucks come with narrow semi scale metal wheels. Plastic KD compatible couplers with a flexible knuckle activation rod which should be replaced for use.

I got 2 MILW cars in the 2100 series and 2 SP cars in the 651000 series.

The price is affordably $21.99.

They make rugged travel cars and filler cars on a layout.

I've seen Rivarossi offer 50' box cars in the recent past so I thought I'd check how these compare to the prototype number series on the models.  MBK showed 3 road names in stock, Rio Grande, Milwaukee and SP.  Only the MILW are left in stock as of this writing.  Being an Rio Grande and SP fan, I tend to stick with models that match the prototype closely so I passed, anyway, here is a bit of what I noticed.

The SP prototype of this number series has a straight side sill vs. the model which has a drop side sill with slopes on either side,

The Rio Grande prototype of the Rivarossi number series has a completely different bottom sill:

The MILW prototype of the model number series has a different type of door and the side sill drop appears to be a bit of a steeper angle.  If the door could be changed to match the prototype, the car would be a better match to the prototype.

I can't speak to the roof based on the photos.

The price at MBK is an economical $17.99.  As mentioned, these models would make good layout or club models.  In a market where there are so many expensive high detail models, these should also be welcome those entering the hobby and/or on a budget.

Cheers, Jim
