Couple of pics from May's "solo" op session
Author: bobdavis

Since it's likely to be a while yet before I can host operating sessions with the regular crew, I'm still doing "solos" at least once a month.  They do help me find problems, and several cropped up this time including an Alco RS11 that began shorting out for some unknowin reason.  I'm attaching two pics from May's effort - an H10s 2-8-0 on the turn to the coal mines and eastbound symbol freight BM-2  starting down the 1.6% grade behind Alco FA/B's.  The Alcos are Bachmanns with Soundtraxx decoders in the A units, the H10 a brass Key also with a Tsunami sound decoder.

A good reason to switch to battery power. I just moved so I am building a new layout. It is going to be all battery power. No more wiring and shorts problems.

A good reason to switch to DC.  Everything is so simple.

Great models and photos.  Hopefully the RS11 is not one of the new Rapido ones?

Thanks for sharing Bob. Wow, being in Wyoming, you are a long way from Pennsy territory!

There are a few of us who live a long way from the RR's we model.  I'm in Virginia and my interest is D&RGW and also SP.  But I grew up in northern CA and traveled thru Utah and Colorado in the 80's.

I will agree with you too, and the cost is a lot less. I'm 63 and I decided not to switch to DCC because of the cost. If you have a short somewhere, it's easy to find.

I like your scenery - really looks like Pennsylvania before the trees grew back.

Beautiful scenery !  Been in HO since 1961 using DC, too old to change now (too expensive as well)

I won't get into the DC vs DCC argument, but since I went with DCC when I built this layout in 2005 I've never had reason to look back.  As far as the shorting RS11, it's not a new Rapido but an older Atlas unit.  I have two Rapido PRR RS11's and so far have had no problems with them.  When I first put them in service I ran the pair around the railroad for a half hour with a 25-30 car freight on 1.6% grades, then reversed the pair and ran them another half hour.  That's not saying they won't crap out tomorrow, but so far, so good.

Wise man.  I never understood why some have to troll posts with comments about "I like my system better than yours".  And yet ... here we go again.
