Modeling a moment in time..
Author: M-420

GP35 #2517 and GP30 #2249 roll southbound through Maltby - recreating a scene of that same consist that I captured in Maltby in 1987..
The models both have Kato drives.

PS - In HO, those tsunami EMD turbo-equipped 567's working together will have you reaching for that mute button in no time at all!

I really enjoy seeing the side by side comparison of models and prototypes, great job and thanks for sharing!

How much work was it to adapt the Kato drive into the P2K GP30?

Does "...reaching for the mute button..." mean the sound is bad, or too loud?

Really, it was not that bad. I used a dremmel and it all took about 45 minutes.
Well worth the effort as the Katos are still among the smoothest runners out there and they play well with my Genesis models.

There is a ridge on the brakeman's side of the frame that needs to be cut down. That this the biggest chop.
Also some relief for the brake ratchet housing.
The last thing is to figure out how you are going to mount the couplers. I cut down the coupler mounts on the frame, but this could be done another way.

I've turned them down, but the whine from the two turbos is a bit much.
The 35 is new, but I have een using the GP30 for some time now and by itself or with a non turbo unit, it is not bad at all.

Maybe it is just me.

Very nice work, and food for thought on adapting the Kato chassis to the Proto shell. I have adapted an Atlas to a Proto GP38-2 with good results.

Also I use to have Saab Turbos which you could never increase the exhaust decibel level because the turbo would muffle it. I would think that locomotives would have the same effect. Am I wrong? All I have nearby currently are GE's, both CSX and Amtrak, to compare.

I like models of a specific point in time, fun to see the story and see what goes into making it in model form. Well done!
