Metal wheel question
Author: mully

I’m going to start replacing some of my old plastic wheels with metal ones and found 36’’ brass Intermountain wheels and Wathers silver.
Anyone have any experience or thoughts?

I've had great sucess with IMR 36" semi-scale wheels. Part number is 40054 (12 per pack). No issues whatsoever!

My favorites in HO are Intermountain 33" and 36" wheels and Bachmann 33" and 36" wheels. Both manufactures wheels roll very freely.

Sometimes the axle lengths can be different in the truck sideframes so you may need to shop around a bit.

Very true.
Watch the "side-to-side" slop.
Too much will affect free-rolling, coupler height and other truck performance issues.

With Reboxx gone, who makes longer axle wheel sets if the Intermountain are too sloppy?

KD and Proto make wheelsets with 'plastic' axles which are thicker at the bearing points and take up some of the slack. The Proto plastic axle wheel sets are the smoothest rolling even in KD metal trucks.
