Scene is taking shape.
Author: ChrisCampi

It's mid May in the early 1990's and our photographer is behind Bay Executive Plastics Corp in Hayward, Ca. along SP's Mulford line as the morning fog is burning off.. He's waiting for the local with a couple of Crud's to drop off a few hoppers of pellets and a box car of cardboard before heading back to work.

Obviously, still lots to do, but I like how the scene is taking shape.

Be well,

Chris

I can't keep up with all the railfan slang.
What is a "crud"?
Just wondering.

Seems to be an SP railfan thing. EMD SW1500.

I've never heard other railfans call an SW1500 a crud Only SP fans. Not even SP Engineers.

Your scene is very realistic because it is "unremarkable".
No dramatic 3/4 wedge of an approaching train or dramatic action, no finely textured wood or rock surfaces, just an ordinary scene we have all witnessed, but usually never bothered to photograph.
You absolutely nailed the sense of place of a modern industrial landscape; it may not be as visually stimulating as on old mine or packing shed but it is as real as it gets these days.
Thanks for sharing.

I agree.  The photo just "jumped" at me as being a sight I had seen many times.   Just great!  To many model railroaders over do the number of cars in sidings and in local trains.  To much to do in to short a time.

When you are satisfied with what you have done send us another photo.

If I may ask what is your technique on the building?  Looks great!  I need lots of concrete tilt ups for my layout.

Really nice looking industry there Chris.  You should be very pleased with the way it has turned out.  I'm wondering which kit you've used for this.

Thanks for the nice feed back guy's. Sorry about the Crud reference. I would also like to know the story behind the name.

The building is six feet long and completely scratch build with Evergreen Styrene. Lines were scribed. Painted with white Rust Oleum primer and an appropriate rattle can blue. Light India ink wash, a few chips in the paint applied ( not necessarily on purpose) and dull coated. Drains were fabricated from various shapes. Magnets hold it against the wall.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,
I agree with the above comments. That is a really good looking industry in its simplistic form.  You nailed it...nice going Chris!

The story I've heard the most is that the SP/SSW SW1500's got the railfan name of "cruds" because they very rarely were washed and always had a bunch of "crud" on them.
Like I said, it seems to be the railfans who gave them this name.

Great work Chris, sure looks like those warehouses in the Bay Area that used to get lots of rail service.

Grass and track work looks nice. I found a thread you may get ideas from:

Consider load wrap trash, paper trash, banding material, pallets, an old tire or two. Also, what about moderate building graffiti? (as much as I dislike it) Just brainstorming with you here

Scene looks great Chris! The wild grass looks especially sharp. As others have mentioned (and I kinda hate to add to it, but it's sorta true), toss around a little trash here and there and some ballast aging, and you'll have it nailed down for a mid 1990s era industrial rail scene.

Thanks for the link. I know that area well. The staged crossing materials is very interesting and doable. Not so sure about trash and graffiti in my little world though, I'd like to think my 1:87 folks are clean freaks :-)

Compromise then, throw some trash out there but hold off on the graffitti. (or put some paint patches on the buildings where the graffitti has been painted over.)

Yes but not the one directly west of the airport but closer to Depot Rd. Although their all very similar in that area.
