Model Railroading > Finally, Some (real) Progress!Date: 07/04/20 20:38 Finally, Some (real) Progress! Author: D0wnt1me After weeks of planning today marked the first day of some real progress on my shelf layout. I installed my shelf brackets using #12 2" Self Driving Srews and a ratchet wrench (.75" screws were used to connect the 1x4s to the bracket). I got 5 out of 6 of them done today, I plan to finish up the job tomorrow along with a blogpost to document the progress.

I want someting strong and perfectly square for the fascia to nail into. I orginally planned to nail my fascia to the 1x4s but their not exactly square.

Date: 07/05/20 13:31 Re: Finally, Some (real) Progress! Author: brfriedm I built my whole 2nd level of my layout using shelving brackets and 1X3's screwed to them. Just like you did. I then glued 2" 2' X 8' Owens Corning foam boards to the 1X3's using foam friendly liquid nails. It is very strong and has been in place for over 20 years. You do not need any plywood. I glued the facia to it also using the same adhesive.
You can buy these 2" foam boards at Home Depot. The 2" foam board is very strong. It is also tongue and groove. Good luck. Author: D0wnt1me I’m using the plywood because I couldn’t get all of my brackets 100% level. With the plywood on the bottom, the foam is almost perfectly level. And because the foam is in 4 different pieces (all I could find was 2’x2’ sections) the solid bottom is quite handy.
