Model Railroading > ScaleTrains SP SD45

EMD's SD45 is one of my brother's favorite locomotives so I think he will be pleased to get this ScaleTrains SP version. The level of detail, to my eyes, is very good.

Looking good!  I ordered 2 since they were bread and butter power where I spent my teens and twenties.  My mother to this day remembers when I was 14 and asked for a Southern Pacific SD45 for Chistmas, which at that time was in the form of the Athearn blue box model; I had to be extra good that fall and it did appear under the Christmas tree.

I do hope ScaleTrains doesn't wait for the 4th or 5th run for the more common version of SP SD45 with the L shaped windshield and high mount brake cylinders!

Wow, now I'm really interested in getting one.  Most models show their flaws when close-up pictures like that are done.  Looking at these pictures I'm not seeing anything to nit-pick.  Nice model.  Thanks for sharing the pictures.

If you have to come up with a complaint, I guess you could say lack of thinwall cab! It looks very nice though to be more serious.

The last SD45 carbody locomotive I saw was in Fort Collins CO a year ago thinking about it, a former SP unit ironically working for Omnitrax.

Buy an undecorated unit and swap out the cab with a Cannon cab.

Ya, looks great. The rear facing trumpet of the horn looks like Dr, Seuss got ahold of it, but really I'm sure I wouldn't even see that without the camera zooming in.

Can;t wait for the lobotomized version of this one.  And the Speed Lettered SD40M-2 version.  My pocketbook screams!

I imagine I'll have to wait for a round of those before ST finally gets to the more common L-shaped Window/high brake cylindar SP SD45; one needs to be patient!

Yep, also waiting for a later version.

Curious how ST and Athearn / Horizon are matching each other, similar models, similar versions, similar pricing, similar etc...

I have no knowledge as to whether or not ST has or plans to make a different mold for that, but then MK rebuilt the SD/SDP45 cores for the SP SD40M-2 program, they changed the radiator fan spacing similar to what is found on SD40s.  The difference is visually quite obvious.  Given their fidelity to prototype detailing, it would be surprising if ST released a version without addressing that issue.

gee, I get to see one every day if I go down past our local Portland & Western yard where one of the former SP SD-45s power our local train!

Love the Dr Seuss observation!

Is it me, or do these models ride a few scale inches high on their trucks?  They just seem to look awkward.  I am always amazed with the ST quality.  The paint is so smooth.  I may have to buy a tunnel motor some day for my desk, Rio Grande, of course.
