New Athearn Announcements

Looks like the new locomotive is the Dash 9 in the Genesis 2.0 line.  I get that it opens the doors for AC units and rebuilds, but seems like ScaleTrains beat them to the punch on this one.

If Athearn makes the 4 bay 9 with the cab and 4 ditch lights working, I'm in...a lot in..

Not fully seeing it, but it looks like Athearn did not do the see through radiator grills. I know competition is a good thing, but I'm leaning towards ST for the win. However, my thought is, Athearn could be better at more releases of as mentioned similar frame options for more variations. Time will tell. Great time for some very detailed models for sure.

Yaaaay, another dash-9.....Its all good, but Scaletrains nailed them already, and for much lower cost.  I guess I'll pick up a couple, if I can find enough difference in what I already have......Gotta keep these guys in business.

RE the Canadian rock lights, yes, they'll all be operable.

RE the grills,  they are see-through.

RE the price, that's MSRP. Many dealers offer discounts. Please support your local dealers and your favorite online retailers.

I don't share the enthusiasm for the see through radiator grills on the ST models. IMO ST didnt capture the look of the prototype very well. That being said, I did purchase 7 ST units so far and ordered several more.

I look forward to the Athearn release. I, like some others, wanted an AC4400, but I applaud Athearn for doing versions different than what ST has done or announced.

Looks like the game is the different cab styles, something that other Companies could do as well.
Yep, that's a lot of money.

If they had just went with the AC4400W out of the gates, this would of been a different story but the Scale Trains units are incredibly nice and this makes no sense. and yes, Scale Trains has openly stated they plan on doing AC4400W's and the current rebuilds. either way I wish Athearn the best of luck in this project.

ScaleTrains units aren't all that in my eyes, the ones I bought have the rear pilots all bent, same problem on the new GEVOs. If Athearn doesn't have warped shells or bent pilots I'm all in on their version.

I know putting scale screens onto locomotives basically negates the see through effect. But like the tunnel motors (plus GP15-1 and MP15AC) and 70ACe's, having that see through effect is kind of neat. Won't please everyone all the time and I'd agree the look has to be balanced with the options. I know IM and ST GEVO Tier 4's are an ongoing debate on which screens/see through options look better or not.

And I'll watch the upcoming video, but currently the data sheet says: "Etched, see-through walkway steps" and no mention of the radiator section. Not that it needs to. Also the frame looks like the cube speakers are awful close to the see through section. I'll know in a few hours, so all is good.

Now...to go find more money for model train stuff. I liked some of the cars announced, so Athearn will be getting more of my earnings.

Edit: I like the view through the grills...like the GEVO Tier 4. I know long hood view as mention look different, but running on the layout, and seeing this option like the real RR's, is pretty cool!!

Just be glad you all get a one time break from the constant GP7/9 announcements.

I second the AC4400CW, or the Tier3 Gevo with the 4 bay windows.
The newer cab .....

Never thought we'd go from no one making Tophats (besides OMI) to two manufacturers making them.  But I'll stick with my ST's locos.

The grills on the model pictured look terrible.

I've seen this comment a few times online... Which Dash-9s have this problem? All I know is my single ST Dash-9 (one of the NS C40-9 standard-cabs) does not have this issue...
