 It moved along with many other former Yahoo groups to the Group.IO platform:

The name of the group. IO in the computer world stands for input/output

Gary,

 To give a more techo-nerdy description of it the IO is part of what is known as the domain name. Specifically, the IO section is called the Top-level Domain name. The selection of the name is up to the entity wanting it and the acceptance of the governing Internet body regulating them.
