Helper power waits at Indio Depot
Author: dmaffei

First Scaletrains SD45 on Signor's layout. Just a good before weathering photo as I'm planning to take the "new" locomotive look away soon. Want to give it a good mechanical check up, a bit of lube if needed and coupler change out.

I have two ST 45's, they run just fine out of the box. Why a check up and lube, you know what they say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I understand the couplers....

I'm looking at preventing issues.  Check to make sure no lube points were missed, any electronic continuity issues and of course coupler. It barely makes any noise at all when running it without sound.

Lovely engine and scene and the ground lights add another interesting dimention.  I also bought 8800 along with 8819 being the SD45 is probably my most favorite engine ever and were common sights in the Davis-Sacramento area during my teens.

Cheers, Jim

Wow Jim, I thought there was still steam when you were a teen.

Steam in the 1970's? I graduated from high school in 1977. My understanding is most steam was gone from mainline service around 1956.

Cheers, Jim

The scene looks like late afternoon, just as the temperature thinks about starting to drop.
In summer that might mean getting back down below 100.
You have captured the feel of the low sun angle and the light filtered by the dust from the fields.

But it is dry heat!  Try >100 and 80% humidity.  When I lived in the Sacramento area, temps could reach 114 as I recall.

We need to put a cicada sound effects loop tape at Indio on his layout ... And when you get close to the depot, it stops! (With a motion sensor)
I can only imagine how hot it was in the cab of a steam locomotive, waiting for a signal in the steam era in the summer at Indio...

That is one thing about California I don't remember - Cicada's.  We certainly have them here in northern Virginia.  That would be a cool sound effect for atmosphere!
