largest radius curve on 5 X 9 ho layout
Author: bluesboyst

Anyone know the largest radius curve I can have on a 5' X 9' HO layout?

Thanks

Math is your friend: 5 ft X 12 in = 60 in. less 2 in. assuming you want to have at least an inch from the outside rail to the edge of the layout on each side leaves you 58 inches for trackwork to make a half circle. Divided by 2 = 29 inch radius.

I always assumed that the radius was measured from the track centerline. Have I been wrong for years?

Actually, it would be a maximum 28" radius (to the center of the track) if you want to keep the track edge 1" in from the edge of the layout. I am allowing a 2" ROW width, not just track tie width.

If you can, try to expand the layout so that the mainline would be 30".  I have found that operations seemed much, much less troublesome after I moved to 30" (and #6 turnouts).  I had trouble with 24, 26 and 28 inch radii when running long wheel-base locos and rolling stock.  GP locos don't seem to mind tight radii.  Passenger cars and autoracks get finicky on tight radii.
