NYC 4-8-4 Live Steam Model Being Built Shiloh Ohio
Author: train544

Hi Guys
Here is a real nice live steam model of a NYC 4-8-4 & tender being built
This gentleman with a machice shop has been working on building this engine for 12 years
He has some piping to finish and wants to have it done and running by next spring or summer
The tender is all riveted together
He has built an outside layout to run on of about 173 feet around the property and is going to add some more tracl
He ran a train today and I got pictures and will post later of the layout and train
Located outside of Shiloh on Rt 603

Which class of NYC 4-8-4 is this?

Although a beautiful locomotive, it is nowhere close to looking like any of NYC's 4-8-4s.  NYC had 27 4-8-4s, in the S1a, S1b, and S2a classes.  They were very big, and all looked similar to the Bachmann HO NYC 4-8-4 model and sported centipede tenders.

Yeah, they would have been the Niagrara.

I must slightly amend my previous post.  NYC had one more 4-8-4, #800.  Built in 1931, it was an experimental three-cylinder locomotive with an experimental "high pressure boiler".  The locomotive was unsuccessful as a road locomotive.  Quickly removed from road service, #800 found itself assigned to the Selkirk Yard hump, where it was equally unsuccessful.  #800 met the scrappers torch earIy on.

Looks much closer to NYC 800 than a niagara (yes, this is a real photo)

Didn't a couple of the Northeastern roads have some small 4-8-4's? Could it be a model of one of them?
Or is this a freelance design.

Looks like a freelance design using mostly Little Engines parts, including their characteristic outside admission slide valve cylinder block evident by the fact that the valve rod comes in below the valve stem on the combination lever and the eccentric crank leads the main pin in forward motion rather than follow.
This of course, was a departure from inside admission valves used on modern steam power. Nice build and machine work.
