GP60M and Bs
Author: texchief1

Did anybody model the Santa Fe GP60M and or B. If more than one did, whose is the best?

Thanks for your answers.

Athearn did them in the RTR line early 2000's and some subsequent runs.   I have an ABBA set they run decent but lack in details.  Fox Valley did them more recently and the were superior as far as detail but cannot speak to performance on the rail as I dont own any.  .

These the best, GP60M - GP60 at Comanche, Tex. (not Athearn)

Well for what it's worth, Overland did two runs of these in brass. The first was
unpainted, but the second was painted, pad printed and fully finished....still available
on EBay occasionally, and at good prices...actually close to plastic prices.

I've seen good things about Fox Valley GP60Ms and GP60Bs here in the past:

The Athearn models are a good base to build from, if you like building models.

If memory serves, the Athearn offerings were based off old Railpower shells....unless they retooled them at swome point afterwards. I've been out of HO for a while now.

As mentione, it was the RTR version. Still kicking myself for not grabbing a couple of the war bonnet units. I know Fox valley did the GP60's as did Walthers. Was not aware they did the M's though.

Fox Valley Models would be my choice if you can find them.  Great runners and excellent detail.  Multiple paint schemes available:

FVM GP60M
FVM GP60B

Cheers,
Brian

Looks like Spring Creek Model Trains has a few of the paint schemes in stock (both Athearn and FVM), just not the Warbonnet GP60M.

Spring Creek Model Trains - FVM

Spring Creek Model Trains - Athearn

If these things matter to you, Athearn did a run of these to be avoided.  The road numbers produced were 144 (wrecked/scrapped 12/14/94 on Cajon), 148 (wrecked/scrapped 11/7/90 at Corona CA), and 152 (wrecked/scrapped 11/7/90 at Corona CA).

Fox Valley also did 152, which I accidentally bought and need to renumber.

The Fox Valley run great, but the stem coming up to rotary beacon has to be painted or it will light up the roof of the cab

I believe that Rail Power produced the GP60B shells to fit on the Athearn GP60 Blue Box chassis.
Never had the Fox valley Models but from what I've seen, the detail work looks very good.
I have 2 GP60M's and 6 GP60B's from OMI Half are factory/custom painted the others I'm doing myself.
All of them have the German Buhler can motor and some of the drive shafts slip, which is typical in some of the OMI drives
