Santa Fe reefer block
Author: santafedan

I finally got 24 Santa Fe reefers for my shipment East.
I had 14 for a long tine (20 years) and found a fellow disposing of his late father's Santa Fe rolling stock.  I got 10 and with some work they run fine.
Now let's hope the produce is sold before it reaches Kansas City.  As I understand, the produce is often sold as the trip East progresses.

Saw many a train on both the ATSF and the SP consisting of ice cooled reefers decades ago in California. Power was usually 3 - 4 F units. On a hot day  such trains stood out from other freights as they were accompanied by wispy clouds of water vapor down at truck level as water slowly ran from each corner of the reefers as the train rolled along at a fast clip.
Nice modeling!

Like the train, like the layout, like the video, but shouldn't you be blowing the horn at those crossings?

Ice bunker and mechanical reefer blocks over Donner were sure fun to watch back in their day.  Seeing the ice bunker loading process in Roseville added to the experience of watching the "orange parade."  Nice vids BTW, thanks for sharing.

I do not have control of the sound.  I was given the locos and they are Athaern sound units.  I do not have the control fot them.  Also, I am DC.

Nice train.  Maybe some day you can add a dcc system.

Afraid not.  With over 60 locomotives that is out of my price range.

It would be out of my price range to all at once as well but bit by bit I'm chipping away at it.

Nice layout and impressve trains of old Athearn Blue Box reefers (hard to find nowdays).  The Longs or
Intermountain ATSF reefers were perfect and also probably hard to find today.  If you really want a workout, build a few old C&BT ATSF reefers.  They got some things right, but had gross details meaning you had to round up a lot of better details from others suppliers, also a frustration today. They sure look nice though.

Intermountain released a new run of the 40's PFE ice reefers not long ago.  A few vendors may still have them.  I pickedup a bunch toward a one-off reefer train to be pulled by an AC-10 cab forward.
