One Alco S4, 24 loaded reefers and a waycar trying to get back to Santa Ana while dodging San Diagans! Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/21/20 16:29 by PHall. Date: 10/21/20 17:32 Re: SF reefer block 29 years earlier Author: BostonMaine Great video
Date: 10/21/20 22:30 Re: SF reefer block 29 years earlier Author: wabash2800 Thanks Dan. Even though there are only 30 reefers in the train, plus the caboose and engine, it appears to be a much longer train! Not bad for less than 20 ft. in length.

Not even my train club! I'd say a 30 car train is pretty long for a home layout. And let's see, at ~$40 a car (assuming IM/RC decorated reefers), that's about $1,200 rolling past the camera lens just in the reefers. Not an insignificant investment, by any means! More impressive if they were built from kits. Arved Grass Fleming Island, FL Date: 10/23/20 08:00 Re: SF reefer block 29 years earlier Author: SPDRGWfan Arved Wrote:

I agree, 30 cars gives a long look to the train without having 3x the cars. Cheers, Jim Fitch Date: 10/23/20 13:03 Re: SF reefer block 29 years earlier Author: cabman Those aren't $40 cars. They appear to be old Athearn reefers due to the black section from the roof along the top of the sides above the doors.

Others look like newer and more expensive Intermountain cars. He's got a real mix going. Date: 10/23/20 14:45 Re: SF reefer block 29 years earlier Author: SPDRGWfan PHall Wrote:

But I've mostly been paying closer to $30 for the Intermountain ice PFE reefers I've gotten. Date: 10/23/20 16:30 Re: SF reefer block 29 years earlier Author: PHall SPDRGWfan Wrote:

By the time you add the cost of Kadee couplers and the materials weather the car, you're probably approaching that $40 mark. Date: 10/23/20 16:47 Re: SF reefer block 29 years earlier Author: santafedan The original 14 reefers are over 45 years old! They had the old Athearn sprung trucks. When I started building the layout, I had about 50 or so cars. I wanted to change the wheels to the newer RP25 wheels.(I think that is correct) The hobby shop demanded I pay for half of the 50 sets of trucks before they would order them. I guess no one had ever put in an order like that.

When you can't see the whole train at a time, it does make the train seem longer...And that is what we want.
