Thinned acrylic washes shift to gray color if necessary.

It is commonly used for sandblasting and in tile grout. There are several different grit sizes ranging from coarse (#12 or #16) to medium (#30) to fine (#60 or #90). Compared to buying small bags of model railroad ballast, silica sand is ridiculously cheap.
