Passenger cars for the Erie Lackawanna Lake Cities?
Author: RuleG

On today's Nostalgia & History Board is a nice trio of photos posted by Marty Bernard showing the Erie Lackwanna Lake Cities in Hammond, IN.

With 2 E8s adorned in EL's attractive scheme and a relatively short consist of cars, this train is an appealing prototype for modeling.  Do any of you have suggestions for HO scale cars which can be used to model this train?  I am not looking for brass cars/car sides, but would be OK with plastic cars which are not exact replicas.

IMHO   Try a 40' Express boxcar, 2 baggage cars and 2 coaches

Someone offered the ex-Erie lightweight baggage car in kit form some years ago.  Rapido offered a former Erie "Youngstown" series 10/5 Pullman (which ran occasionally on the Lake Cities), in EL colors, but that was more than ten years ago.  No one had ever produced the ex-DL&W 300 series/EL 1300 series coaches in any form that I know of,  but any smoothside coach could be used a a stand in if you're not too particular about the specifics.  Perhaps 40 years ago, Nickel Plate Products produced the Erie heavyweight streamstyled diner-lounges used on trains 5/6 in unpainted brass, but they were so poorly designed from a running gear and underbody standpoint as to be basically inoperable without a compete rebuild below the carbody.

The lack of correct Erie, DL&W and EL through line passenger equipment has long been a serious omission in the hobby.

The ancient AHM/Rivarossi 10-6s are close to right and are offered in correct paint.   The smoothside coaches while actually a KCS "divided" car are fairly close for the 300/1300s.    Model Railroading did an article on modeling E-L passenger trains  a several decades ago.   If you choose to model pre 1963, there would be an NKP 10-6 which can be done from the C&O/B&O half fluted 10-6s done within the last decade.   No one has done either the diners or the iconic 'Phoebe Snow'  lounge obs cars.

thank you Art and BrynMawr for your replies.   Prior to posting, I thought that the AHM cars might work, but wasn't sure.
