Atlas NS Dash 8 Headlight placement
Author: bigmc83

Upon examining my locomotive fleet, I realized my HO Norfolk Southern Atlas C40-8W wide cab #8408 has the wrong headlight placement.  It should be a high mounted light (per ex-CR heritage as this unit is) but instead the model features a nose mounted one.  At first I thought it might be a prototype change as a result of a wreck or rebuild or something, but upon researching it I found this unit was a regular ol' CR/NS engine with the high headlight till the end.   I realize this model is several years old, but it's the first time I've ever looked at it that closely.  Serves me right for not catching this sooner, but does anyone know if Atlas was aware of this or offered replacement cabs?

Thanks,
Sean McCaffery

I have a Conrail version that is probably not right also...I have done the same thing on the newer models thinking they would be correct. Now I have to check so don't feel bad lol. I am not sure on the replacement cab...they might have just made the one version.

Atlas engines are usually not road name specific for details. While good looking for sure you may have to do a little work to get exactly what you want.

Put it up on Ebay and sell it.

Atlas was aware of the discrepancy soon after their release, Atlas indicated that replacement cabs would be made available at no cost sometime in the future. I telephoned Atlas and gave them my contact information, but have not heard anything about it since then.

Thanks everyone. I'll contact Atlas just to be sure. I also have a CR patch unit that does have the correct light placement, so that's what confused me.

Bruce: I'll probably hold it for now but when I get the bug to refresh the fleet, it will be at the top of the list to go

Change the cab number to a unit that did have the right light placement or actually do some modeling.

Which would mean having to repaint it for another railroad, as NONE of CR's (and those transferred to NS) had nose mounted lights.

Might want to consider that fact, before getting snarky.

No, minus 1,000...

There are no NS Dash-8s with nose lights, and Atlas should be getting stuff like this correct because of the price they charge... And why do we put this person's modeling ability into question because he's asking why they got it wrong? What's that even got to do with anything?

So maybe do a little modeling and change the location of the light to the correct location.
Good simple project that will produce good results at a minimal price.

That's in the same category as buying a car online with a sunroof, noticing it hasn't got one after it's arrived, and saying "No problem! I'll make my own!"

If it's advertised as correct it needs to be correct, or the advertisement saying it is needs to be changed to say it's not correct... If he (or anyone else) *WANTS* to fix it himself then fine, more power to him... But the automatic expectation shouldn't be that we'll automatically fix any flub from the manufacturer...
