Athearn's New SP Mt-4
Author: asab1501

I was surprised to see that Athearn is again offering the non-skylined version of the Mt-4 with the smaller 120C tender. If I recall correctly, all of the Mt-4s came with the larger 160C tender though some later used the smaller ones. As these non-skylined models represent the locos earlier in their lives, I would think the 160C would have been a better choice

I know this is an old guy comment, but the MSRP is a lot higher this time around.  Doesn't mean that I won't consider getting one though.

Not an old guy comment at all; we've all noticed model train prices trending higher and higher...

Athearn does not make a 160-C-1,2, or 3 tender. With the shutdowns and elimated model factories I do not think they will ever make one, at least until things change over seas.

Perhaps someone could offer one 3D printed on Shapeways?

Are you sure about that?  When Athearn came out with the San Joaquin Daylight painted one they had a 160-C tender.  They offered it with the black pained loco's at that time too.  I was kind of annoyed - I thought the 160-C type tender looked better than a 120 type and would have waited for it if I knew it was in the works. See the link:

wingomann,

Show me a picture of one, not an add, but the real deal.

Athearn’s second run of skyline casing equipped MT4s included models with 160-C-3 tenders.

They were also available separately.

Looks like if you want one, you'll have to find the scalpers on eBay.

Funny you should say that. I had my " Old Man Moment " looking at the Surfliner cars on the same release. $800 for a set of five or $200 each had me do a double take.

But they have DCC lights and sound thus the high price.

Lol that's the first thing I thought of.

Great minds flush alike :-)

Without noise is still 150 bucks. All of a sudden Rapid is a bargain.
