Replacement Gear Components for Proto 2000 four-axle Diesels

The earlier locos were notorious for cracked gears. I understand that replacment gears can be obtained from Athearn or Walthers. What are the part numbers?

Thanks. I bought a bargain Proto 2000 on eBay with this known problem. I will probably need to do the same with other units on my roster over time.

You want the 40" wheels not the 42", those are for Dash-2's and beyond. Try 60028, you'll need at least 2 packs for multiple 4-axle units as they come with six axles per package. Not sure why this came through sideways...

Thanks Trackplanner and KM-ML4000. I ordered just the gears (60024) so I should be OK. I found a few videos on the "Tube" that clarified that these were the right gears even though they are advertised as for SD40-2. ProtoWest also makes them.

Several years ago, I had an Athearn ALCO RS-3 converted to NWSL powered trucks.  While the purpose of this conversion was to make more room under the body for DCC and eventually deadrail. it may solve the Athearen gear problem.

If you are talking about Proto 2000 or Life Like E units , no.  You will have to purchase the Athearn black plastic axle gears only . Pull the old cracked gears off the wheel and axle and push on the new gear . The E units from these manufacturers have extended axles that fit into little journal boxes and the Athearn 4028 part does not have those axle extensions. Be sure to use a HO standards guage to check the flange width after pushing the wheels on the black plastic gears.  Best wishes... UP 951 West
