Should Scale Trains do Four compartment tank cars (HO)!
Author: inyosub

I'm gonna post this here as I sent this same letter to Scale Trains and only got the automated response; no real reply (from July 1)
I'm hoping it will at least get their attention; as well may gauge the interest.___________________________________
Hello
This may be kind of coming out of left field but here goes.
Since you guys bought a lot of the MTH stuff, I was wondering
If you obtained the drawings for the 4 compartment tank cars
That they offered in their O scale line?  This would be a GREAT
Item for us HO scale modelers and all the work as far as drawings
And tooling info is already done; just needs to be resized to HO
Scale and adjusted to ScaleTrains standards.
Doing these would be a great coupe! I my self have wanted models
Of these since the 80s !!! Pecos River Brass was going to do them
In HO and I had them ordered and they were never made. They
Did do them in O scale (Ugggg!)
I hope  you will look into these for HO modelers
Below is a link to one of the MTH scale ones on ebay, you
Can search 4 compartment cars to see various roads they
Did. I myself want them in a plain black in co. like Mobil  or ETCX
Or UTLX etc.  Cheers

Thank you for sharing. I guess these are kind of a replacement for the older 'beer can' cars. If a customer needed smaller amounts of product, but different varieties. Instead of many little cars, could get one car delivered and have the variety of products. Pretty neat car.

I could go for a 3 compartment car too MrMRL  but I just didn't want to clutter up the
message too much. Plus of course that the info for producing the 4 compartment is out there
already.
I _really_ appreciated the posting of prototype photos as they may enhance interest. I have seen
the cars all over. But specifically on the old SP Morenci Branch handed off to Phelps Dodge was interesting.
Prolly different grades of lube oil for heavy equipment but that is just a WAG.

Not really, it all depends on how the car was set up. You could have the same commodity in all three compartments or a different commodity in each compartment. All depends on what the customer wants or needs.

These ETCX cars are owned by Eastman Chemical(formally Eastman Kodak). Lots of them here in Kingsport, Tn where they are filled up with stuff. Looking at my photos of these cars photos show:
etcx 83003 on 6-21-2019 loaded with these chemicals 1276,1274,1123
etcx 83003  no date loaded with 1123,1274,1123
etcx 83003 on 7-8-2019 loaded with 1276,1274,1274
etcx 84003  on 11-23-2019 loaded with 1274,1110,1274,1110
etcx 84007;on 7-17-2019 loaded with1110, 1123, 1110, 1123

Cannot help with the chemical names to go with the numbers.

Referencing my "Cargo Decoder" app on my phone, I find the following;
1276 - n-Propyl Acetate
1274 - n-Propanol and/or Propyl Alcohol, normal(two entrys)
1123 - Butyl Acetates
1110 - Methyl amyl ketone

A handy app to have to find out what is in tank cars passing through Cheyenne

I would be interested in them. They are delivered to an oil dealer in American Fork, UT on a fairly regular basis. And I’d probably snag one anyway since my dad used to work at a refinery.

These should NOT be released in HO.  (Well, not before they're released in 'N')

Not to rain on your parade, but you don't just resize tooling from O to HO.  You start again from scratch, which makes it an all-new model.

I routinely 3D-print models or CAD files by found in "O Scale to ho by simply rescaling them I doubt that works fully with injection-molded products but I can't imagine why......I always rescale the model by a % value so that what is a 1/2" plate item in large scale is still a 1/2" thick plate in the smaller scale.....The trick is to scale by picking a good item on the model to use to set the scale with...so that the scale factor yields a believable model., i.e. a 1/2" thick plate measures 1/2" on the model.

I don't buy much model train stuff anymore (I haven't bought anything since 2017) but I would definitely buy a few multiple compartment tank cars.

Propanol and propyl alcohol are two names for the same chemical. The normal/n means the OH is attached to one of the end carbons. Isopropanol/isopropyl alcohol means the OH is attached to the middle carbon.
