CNW x RI GP9's question
Author: xupshareholder

Not having any luck finding a roof shot of one of the ex RI GP9's the CNW aquired after shutdown.

Do these units also have the roof access hatches like the ex RI GP7's have?

TIA

Got a specific number?

All of those rebuilds were different, especially the GP7's.  No two were alike, some got things others did not, like the roof doors.

CNW 4550 - 4559 were ex CRIP Rock Island GP9s too

4452 is allegedly an ex C&O unit with dynamic brake grids.

Not sure if this helps your specific search for a roof top photo of CNW 4452, but in this view, both the CNW 4207, and the trailing CNW 455x (which would be an ex CRIP GP9) BOTH units have roof access panels/hatches.

This shows the roof hatches on one of the GP7s.  I'm not sure if the 4500 series GP9 rebuilds had the same hatches.

They provided better access for engine repair. When repairing the diesel engine the locomotive machinists could remove the engine cylinder head, the piston and connecting rod, and the cylinder liner all together as one component called the 'Power Assembly'. Using a crane and lifting the power assembly straight up and out through the roof access hatch rather than disassembling the engine cylinder head, piston and connecting rod, and cylinder liner as individual pieces which consequently would require much more time for the repair. Most well established Diesel Shops fabricated their own 'lifting arms' to aid in removal of the power assemblies without using the roof access hatches anyway, or when a model locomotive did not have any roof access hatch.
