Final call for Railroader / Modeler Tim Dickinson
Author: dmaffei

Retired SP engineer and extremely talented model railroader Tim Dickinson passed away yesterday. I photographed his layout 12 years ago when I first met him. He's been here on Trainorders as alcoc636 and always assisting the model railroader with his railroad expertise. Tim's passing is a huge loss to the modeling community, especially the Southern California modelers. Rest In Peace my friend.

Met Tim once at an RPM and we'd planned reciprical visits that never happened. Was a true gent
when I'd talked to him; like many of really well done layout owners are. Their works spoke for them.
Very sad to here this.

Tough loss of a longtime friend of 43 years.  He told me earlier this year that working on his layout with his dedicated group of regulars was very therapeutic for him.  I know his cancer treatment was very difficult, and he bore it well.

Tim was a great man.  He was featured years ago on BLMA's video featuring their Top Gons.

So sorry to read this.  As my brother WP921 (Gary) stated, we've known Tim for 43 years as he was a railroader friend of our late father.  So shocked that he has passed, he really accomplished a lot - as he and his friends really moved the model railroad industry forward in terms of almost all manufacturers adding more detail to locomotives and rolling stock.

Tim was larger than life in so many ways.  A true friend, an incredible modeler, a railroader through-and-through, a great storyteller and so much more.  The notes being posted here by so many are proof that he brought people together through his kindness, knowlegde and modeling.

His ability to bring friends together and provide a place where we could laugh, enjoy each other and talk trains, was his true superpower.  I can easily thank Tim, for many of the friendships I have today.  And for that, I'm forever thankful.

Tim retired from Union Pacific on June 13, 2017.  Having spent decades as a hogger, he was originally hired by the SP and (reluctantly) served with the UP, after the merger.  He invited a few close friends to join him on his final day at UP.  Here are some photos from that day; what a great memory and privelege that was!  (And for any of you who knew Tim, you can only imagine he told his managers very blatantly to stay away that day, knowing he had some 'company' up in the cab.  And guess what... they absolutely DID stay away.)

To say the least, I'm heartbroken to have lost one of my best friends.  He was taken way too soon, and he will be greatly missed by many.

Great tribute to one cool guy. A few more from my 2010 visit. It was during the RPM meet in Southern California. Thanks for sharing your pictures and memories.
