Model Railroading > 060 ho loco ?

Hi all. Going to the show in Amherst MA next week would like to buy either a 060 or 040 loco with a  slope back tender. who makes a reasonably priced non-dc loco.  Better yet what manufactures should I shun.  Thanks U34CH

Tyco made a 0-4-0 with sloped tender.  They badged it The Shifter.
It was a OK puller but not extremely smooth running.

Bachmann makes a 0-6-0 with sloped tender.  It runs OK but won't pull much.

There are lots of brass shunting engines with sloped tenders, but they can be
hit and miss performance wise, and can be pricey.  



 

Proto 2000 made a nice 0-6-0 about 20 years ago.  Pretty well detailed, part of their Heritage Steam collection with a nice box.  Seems to be quite a few on the 'Bay.

I'm not sure if Walthers has ever rerun these since they took over Proto 2000.  And they all seemed to have square tenders.

The Proto 2000 model was of an USRA 0-6-0. They were all built with square tenders. Some did manage to get a sloped back tender via a tender swap later in their service life.

The "reasonably priced" part is tricky.  The newer Bachmann 0-6-0 runs well and won't break the bank, got mine for about $85 with a sloped back tender (ATSF). It's better than the old pancake motor one I had some years ago. Runs just fine, but as said here, it's not hugely heavy.  It pull swhat it needs to.

Also, small note, the show isn't in Amherst, but the Amherst Railway Scoiety show in West Springfield, MA.
